The Lesbian Health Fund (LHF), an organization of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), has granted three $10,000 grants for research into lesbian health. LHF has given more than $450,000 to fund lesbian health research since 1992.
The present grant recipient Susan Jo Roberts said,
this grant would help to investigate the approach and viewpoint of lesbians about risk factors for heart problems, smoking, obesity, hypertension, and less physical activities. Recent research has confirmed that lesbians have these risk factors, perhaps more than other women do. There is a need to organize culturally sensitive and effective programs to reduce this risk.
LHF president Marion Kavanaugh-Lynch says,
the grantees are very much aware about the increasing health problems. They want to improve the lives and health of lesbians everywhere.
