Intake of fruits and veggies rare amongst Americans

Watching Americans, eating fruits and vegetables has become quite a rare sight these days. The report carved out by the researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at least rectifies this thing. According to the researchers who came up with this startling finding, Americans are not eating anywhere near enough fruits and vegetables and thus putting themselves at risk of heart disease, cancer and other health problems. This conclusion by the researchers is the based upon the study, which included 14,997 adults (18 years) from 1988 to 1994 and 8,910 adults from 1999 to 2002 with complete demographic and dietary data. As per the findings of this report, approximately 62% did not consume any whole fruit servings and 25% of participants reported eating no daily vegetable servings. There was no improvement in Americans’ fruit consumption during this period and there was a small decrease in vegetable intake. Throwing light on the importance of adequate fruit and vegetable intake Linda C Nebeling, PhD, MD, RD, FADA, of the National Cancer Institute, NIH, said:

The majority of U.S. adults continue to consume fewer than five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Increases in public awareness of the importance of and recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption are yet to be accompanied by increased intake, demonstrating the need for a reinvigorated effort to promote fruit and vegetable consumption.

This revelation is quite shocking because fruits and vegetables constitute an integral part of our food intake. In addition, inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables has been linked to higher susceptibility to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease, which makes these findings more horrific. Here it is worth mentioning that fast food like French fries, pizza, burger, hot dog are highly consumed by the Americans, keeping aside vegetables and fruits. This very thing makes Americans more prone to health problems like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure too. I strongly believe that this is quite a serious issue that should be worked upon with doubled energy and spreading awareness among people about the fact that how important regular intake of fruits and vegetables is, could prove one of the best methods to accomplish this task.
