India's blind millions find hope in flying eye hospital

orbis1 2112
The worlds only flying eye hospital run by Orbis, an international non-profit organization will be in India for two weeks from March 30 – April 12 to train hundreds of eye care personnel and also perform surgeries on hundreds of blind people.

Orbis is focusing on preventing blindness in developing countries, operates the flying hospital on a converted McDonnell Douglas DC-10 jet that has been traveling for 25 years and has treated more than four million people in 80 countries.

The aircraft has operation theaters, patient waiting space, a consultation room, a technical support area and a training room.

India has the world’s largest blind population and has only one eye surgeon per 100,000 people and because of the country’s limited infrastructure, about 75% of the blind people, mostly children suffer from blindness which could have been prevented if treated on time.

The mission of Orbis is to train more and more eye care personnel especially in pediatric ophthalmology so that every one has access to adequate eye-care on time and thereby prevent blindness which can be avoided.

We train the trainers and we hope this ripple effect will benefit millions of blind people in India

says G.V. Rao, country director of the New York-based Orbis flying eye hospital.
