Heart disease reaches alarming proportions in UK

The Journal Heart says that in UK, Heart disease accounts for a bulk of the healthcare budget and expenditure. The total expense on cardiovascular disease is £29bn a year. This figures is the highest in the EU. Oxford University’s Health Economics Research Centre based these calculations on all residents with diagnosed cardiovascular disease in 2004 in UK.

According to the study, the healthcare accounted for sixty percent of the total cost to the UK economy. Cardiovascular disease cost the NHS about £16bn in 2004. Patient care cost near about £10bn. This makes it as the most expensive component. And drug costs amounted to almost £3bn. Cardiovascular disease causes about forty percent of all deaths in the UK.
