Health concerns at the Beijing Olympics

WHO officials are at high alert to handle public health and emergency services in the coming 2008 Beijing Olympics. Henk Bekedam, a WHO official in China says that the flood of visitors will come together with infectious as well as non-communicable diseases in the country. To prevent this, a strong surveillance system must be ready months before the event.

Beijing has already established a comprehensive prevention and control system in the country following the attacks of SARS and Birdflu. But it must reinforce epidemic scrutiny power at lower levels too.

Wang Yu, director of Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says,

we will be able to make a quick and tough surveillance on any detection of infectious disease during olympics.

At the same time, an emergency medical rescue network will covers urban as well as rural areas of capital. The Organizing Committee of Beijing Olympic Games already has located the bases to provide foods for the Games. Strict experiments on domestic animals and vegetables are happening to ensure the good quality of food to be provided.
