Grocery Shopping: Myths And Facts Unfolded

There are certain misleading conceptions about grocery shopping which are followed as facts. But it’s time to come out of our conventional shells and become aware of these ‘myths’ of grocery shopping. Read on for some common fictional ‘facts’ associated with grocery shopping:

1. Brown eggs are more nutritious than white eggs
It is believed since ages that brown eggs are more nutritious than white eggs. But the fact is that the color of the shell does not affect the nutrition. The color only indicates the color of the feather of the hen. Moreover, brown eggs are more expensive than white eggs. So, by buying white eggs you can actually save some of money as there is no nutritional difference between the two.

2. Brown bread is made from whole grain wheat
It is not necessary that brown bread is always made from the whole wheat and is better than the white bread. Most of the time it is made from refined white flour. So, color makes no difference. What is important is to check the ingredient list and understand the food label. If the term ‘whole grain’ is mentioned, only then it confirms the presence of whole wheat.

3. Fresh is better than frozen
It is believed that fresh fruits and vegetables are better than the frozen ones, but this is not true. Fresh fruits are useful and nutritious if they are bought for immediate consumption as they start to lose their nutrients with time. But if you want to store them, than go for frozen fruits and vegetables. This is because they are flash frozen to preserve the nutrients.

4. Organic food is always healthier
Organic food is not always healthier but it is always costlier. It is true that consuming organic food reduces the consumption of pesticides. But in no way it is more nutritious then the normal food items. So, it is not always wise to spend more money on the organic product especially when the food is to be consumed after peeling off the skin. Like, in case of oranges, bananas and avocadoes.

5. Milk packed in clear bottles are best
This is a misconception because such containers do not prevent the breaking down of riboflavin, which is a light sensitive vitamin B present in milk.

6. Buy in bulk
Buying food packed in bigger packets is not always better and cheaper. Sometimes it can be unhealthy for your family when you go for a larger packet of potato chips than a smaller one. It also increases the temptation level. You should only buy healthy food items like cereals and oatmeal in bulk quantities.

7. All dairy food products contain fat
You shouldn’t try to avoid all dairy products thinking that they are rich in fats, cholesterol, and calories. Milk and its products are essential for your diet as they are rich sources of calcium, proteins, and vitamin D. You can check the food labels for dairy products that are fat free or low in fat.

8. Stay away from sweets
There is no need to keep all sugar products away from your home. Buy ice-cream, puddings, and cookies, which are low or reduced in fats. This can add to the variety of food and add a few nutrients as well. Serving one scoop of low fat ice-cream with fruits can make your kid enjoy his meal.

9. Avoid fruit juice drinks
It is not necessary to always have fresh and frozen fruits. You can have fruit juices also for a change. But be sure to check the food label before you buy them. Always buy juice marked as 100 percent natural as they are low in sugar content. Whereas fruit juice and canned drinks are sugary syrups with no nutritional value.

10. Skip the pasta and macaroni shelves
It is believed that low carbohydrate diet is healthy. But growing children need carbohydrates in their diet. So, do not keep them away from their favorite pastas, macaroni and spaghetti. Just make sure that you buy whole grain wheat pastas and use low fat dairy products with it.
