According to a recent study — green tea may provide protection against bladder inflammation.

Dr. Michael B. Chancellor, professor of urology and gynecology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said in a statement:

We discovered that catechins found in green tea protected both normal and cancerous bladder cells from inflammation when we exposed the cells to hydrogen peroxide.

Michael said that further studies in this particular research is still required, the recent study result shows that the herbal component present in green tea could be utilized in the treatment of different bladder conditions.

In the lab test, Michael and his team — firstly treated the cells of normal and cancerous bladder with the 2 main catechin components found in the green tea i.e. epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG) and then these cells were treated with hydrogen peroxide.

Though Hydrogen peroxide destroys the cells, but the components present in green tea provide protection to the cells. The team mentioned that the concentrations of the 2 kinds of catechins were at levels that can be achieved by normal diet.

The study was presented on Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association.
