Gingivitis hurts more than your teeth

A research says that periodontal disease intensifies a variety of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, premature births. Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease. It harms the body in other way too other than teeth problems. Oral bacteria get into the blood and cause inflammation of other body tissues.

An oral infection could activate inflammatory responses from the immune system. It affects rest of the body negatively.

Dr. Steven Offenbacher, at the University Of North Carolina School Of Dentistry, is looking to the link between periodontal disease and preterm birth.
