First Plague death in 12 years in New Mexico

The state Department of Health in New Mexico has said that a Bernalillo County woman died of septicemic plague last week. However, it did not release any details of other plague victims. It is the first death from plague in last twelve years.

New Mexico reported four human plague cases last year. This bacterial disease spread in Bernalillo County and other areas of north-central New Mexico last year. The bacteria multiplication occurs in blood and results in the septicemic plague. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it transmits by the bites of infected fleas and by direct contact with infected animals too.
