First bowel cancer patient in UK dies

Mrs Newbery, 26, was probably the first in the UK to be medicated with Avastin, an unapproved drug to treat her bowel cancer. She has died St James’s Hospital, Leeds, after surgery to remove liver and bowel tumours. She died after a 10-and-a-half hour operation.

She was given the private medication of Avastin available for £50,000. The Daily Mirror newspaper had launched a campaign earlier to get her the drug on the NHS. She appeared on television just before the surgery. She was completely aware of the danger but was firm to go through the operation.
