First Bird Flu Case in Poland

Bird flu virus did not seem to spare Poland. The deadly H5N1 strain has been confirmed in two wild swans there on Friday. Initial tests had already shown that the birds died from a version of the H5 virus. The birds were found near a river in the northern city of Torun. And this marks the country’s first case of the disease.

The Polish authorities imposed hygiene-security restrictions around the river bank on Sunday. It is where the birds were found. The infected birds were found on the River Oder, the border between Poland and Germany. The authorities also set up a crisis centre to deal with the outbreak. It was in February, Germany confirmed its first cases of the virus.
