FDA panel approves Gardasil

An advisory committee of Food and Drug Administration voted 13-0 to approve the safety measures and efficiency of Gardasil, which is a Merck and Co.’s product. The drug obstructs viruses that cause cervical cancer.

Gardasil protects against the two types of human papillomavirus, responsible for about three-fourth of cervical cancer cases. It prevents from ninety percent of genital wart cases. The expected cost of the vaccine, managed in three shots over six months, is $300 to $400. Experts think Gardasil sales can touch $1 billion a year for Merck. However, the drug does not prevent against infection from the other virus strains not included in the vaccine.
