FDA chalks out guidelines for packaged produce

fda 64Now you can eat packaged produce, considering them safer than before because in an effort to prevent illnesses from bacteria-tainted produce, FDA has issued guidelines regarding packaged eatables.

These guidelines direct to take steps to minimize the spread of bacteria includes recommendations for multiple washings of produce, cold storage, regular water testing and monitoring employees for signs of infectious disease. These new guidelines will apply to bagged spinach, shredded lettuce, salad mixes, baby carrots, cut melons, broccoli florets and other fresh-cut produce.

It seems FDA has learnt a strong lesson from the recently erupted, E.coli outbreak, which I think is a good move. However, only time will tell that how far these new guidelines succeed in accomplishing their determined goal. However, it is quite strange that that there is no mention about the products like eggs, poultry, etc.
