Genetic technology used by athletes to enhance their performance now detectable

Researchers’ new claim that in future, use of genetic technology by athletes to re-engineer their bodies will be detectable may sound like death-knell, especially to those sports persons who go for doping, especially, gene-doping to boost up their sports performance, to have bigger muscles and to higher up their endurance.

By now gene doping, which is illegal, was earlier quite impossible to detect because it does not leave any traces behind, but very soon, if we believe the claims of scientists, it would not be a difficult task to detect it.

Giving some clue about their new method Professor Ljungqvist, chairman of the IOC’s medical commission says sardonically, ‘We are a little ahead of those who may be tempted to use that method for the purpose of doping.’

Before moving ahead let’s try to find out what prompts these sports persons to go for such artificial methods to boost up their performance, their endurance. Some times, I hear people saying that one of the most fulgent reasons behind sportspersons’ temptation to such doping drugs is lack of ignorance. However, such claims often fail to satiate me because I think most of the sportspersons are well aware of the bad implications of such doping drugs. So, what prompt them to go for such drugs? I think, it is their obsession that forces them to visualize their victory and fully forget that the tools they are using to make their victory assured will finally hit them hard.

Actually, day by day the competition is becoming so tougher that to come out victorious in any sport is becoming more and more difficult, just like squaring a circle, and in such situation, the use of these doping drugs seem the easiest way to beat others. Another thing that I hold responsible for this much of increase in the use of doping drugs is the commercialization of sports. If you perform well in sports then you are quite likely to get more contacts, more offers for advertisements, which ultimately force you to deviate from the right path.

I think if the claims made by these researchers come out true then it would like killing three birds with one stone. First, it will higher up the spirit of sportsmanship. Secondly, it will encourage those sportspersons who enter the arena without using such artificial methods to boost up their muscle size, endurance and to add to their performance. Moreover, I think most importantly it will impede those sports persons who are constantly heading to their doom by using such drugs.
