Couples to pay more to sperm donors now

People seeking donor insemination will have to pay up to £1,000. Because sperm supplies are being reduced. It is because of a change in the law in U K. It has removed donors’ right to anonymity.

The traditional donors like students have disappeared and clinics are increasing prices from £200 a cycle a year ago to £700. It is because of the increasing cost of sourcing sperm.

The centre for reproductive medicine and fertility at the Royal Hallamshire hospital, said that sperm prices have became five times high in the last year. They usually pass the cost on to patients.

About 13,000 donor insemination cycles are carried out annually in Britain and about one in 10 result in a birth. The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority has recorded dramatic drops in demand over the past 10 years. The other treatments for heterosexual couples with fertility problems are being offered now.
