Contact lens cleaners may cause Fusarium

Contact lens cleaners, the products of Bausch & Lomb and Advanced Medical Optics Inc. are said to be linked with a rare fungal infection caused by a fungus called Fusarium keratitis. The study came in the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The C.D.C. received 191 reports of eye infections and 86 confirmed cases. 58 of the cases involved contact lens users. 54 of them saying they use lens cleaning solutions from Bausch & Lomb. 3 people said they had used products from Advanced Medical Optics Inc.

First reports of an unusual number of cases received from Hong Kong last November. After investigating them, Bausch & Lomb filed a report with the Food and Drug Administration covering 25 hospitalization and 7 confirmed Fusarium cases. Evidence of the outbreak was also received from Singapore and Malaysia also.

The company stopped selling the product in Asia in February and recently recalled it in this country.
