Cheers! Alcohol may protect against rheumatoid arthritis and smoking risks

and rheumatoid arthritis patients 9

If you have all the popularly-called “bad habits” of smoking and drinking, and have already led your partner to irritation and concerned, am sure most of you must be struggling hard to quit, perhaps both, but failing to do so.

Never mind, though you may not have better reasons to quit both of your habits, you can now have reasons enough to convince your holding on both the habits – yes, reasons and that too medical! It is that consuming particular units of alcohol may help reduce risks of smoking!

While it is found that three units per week or more of alcohol consumption reduces smoking risks, it may also protect against the painful ‘rheumatoid arthritis!’ Ten units a week of consumption may turn up to be more protective still – good new for those who love staying hooked to liquor.

A PhD student Henrik Kallberg at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden said,

Several previous studies have indicated a suppression of the immune system by alcohol and a recent study showed that it prevented development of destructive arthritis. However, until now, epidemiological investigations on the effects of alcohol on RA were scarce and inconsistent. These data now show not only that alcohol can protect against RA and reduce the risk conferred by smoking or susceptible genes, but also gives an idea of the relevant alcohol doses necessary.

Thus, this finding can help better understand the effects of lifestyle on the risk of developing either ‘Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease or RA’ or risks of smoking.

These newly discovered beneficial effects of alcohol are surely breakthrough for the medical fraternity to help come up with new potential treatment approaches and also find out the necessity of doses of alcohol for both smokers and arthritis patients.

So now, you “liquor-lovers” apparently have all good reason to stay hooked to liquor at least 3 times a week, but mind it — too much of anything is never good.
