Boosted radiotherapy may restrict breast cancer coming back again

According to a new research, boosted radiotherapy may effectively stop very early breast cancer returning years after surgery. The treatment should be considered in addition to surgery for patients with cancer precursor cells.

Doctors analysed the records of 373 women who had ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, a condition that can lead to breast cancer. The researchers found that the most effective approach was radiotherapy of the whole breast followed by a boost.

Dr Guenther Gruber, the study leader, said that, radiotherapy should be used in young patients with DCIS to prevent the return of the cancer. These patients may be benefited from an additional dose boost too.
