Blood from bird flu victims can protect from several strains of the virus: Experts

strains of the virus 9

A paradox in itself, an infection can prevent the victim for the same! Researchers have recently found that blood infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus can help protect from several strains of the virus itself in return.

In the research, the experts created human monoclonal antibodies — immune system proteins – that are responsible for recognizing the H5N1 virus.

Dr. Cameron Simmons, of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam said,

We have shown that this technique can work to prevent and neutralize infection by the H5N1 bird flu virus in mice.

Though, such an approach is not new, monoclonal antibodies are specially engineered to attack a certain protein — one found in H5N1. And, this finding is important especially in the world threatened with the avian influenza pandemic.

Ah! It is thus a new, but potential weapon that could curb avian influenza pandemic across the world in future.
