Be careful with emergency contraception

If you frequently reach out for the morning-after-pill after a passionate, wild night with your partner, be careful when you do so. You may be harming you chances of having a successful pregnancy in the future.

What is emergency contraception? It is the contraceptive method, which if taken after having sex, may avoid pregnancy. Some of the measures include Levonelle, the morning-after-pill and intrauterine devices.

Ever since emergency contraception went on sale over the counter at pharmacies, the number of women who use the morning-after pill as a kind of back-to-front contraception, after they have had unplanned or irresponsible sex has grown alarmingly.

The proportion of women obtaining it over the counter rather than from a GP or clinic has almost doubled from 27 per cent in 2004 to 50 per cent in 2005(with one per cent admitting to using it more than twice a year).

Why on earth use something which can play havoc with your system? After all, there are numerous ways to avoid pregnancy.

But, I guess the frequent users of Levonelle, think otherwise.

According to Gemma, an intelligent, privately educated 26-year-old publishing executive from Surrey who is in a long-distance relationship with 35-year-old Daniel, a property developer from Derbyshire,

Daniel and I only see each other at weekends so our sex life is highly charged, and I’m not going to abstain just because I’ve forgotten to take a couple of pills. People will say that we could use condoms, but we feel they desensitized sex and make it less intimate, so we’d rather not bother with them and, to be honest, we’re often too drunk to have a conversation about contraception in the throes of passion anyway.

Such a cavalier attitude!

Frequent users of the morning-after-pill don’t realize that this is not like popping in a vitamin pill. Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness are some of the side effects of Levonelle.

In fact, this pill does not even guarantee you 100 percent protection; there have been numerous cases, when women have become pregnant even after taking the morning-after-pill.

Well, ladies enjoy yourself in bed, but, every time you do so, don’t reach out for the morning-after-pill the next day, because apart from being expensive (£25 per dose), its frequent use can make your reproductive system go completely haywire.
