A research on way to make tongue as real sensor

Military researchers are focusing to make tongues as the real sensor. Soldiers will read signals from helmet-mounted cameras, sonar and other equipment. It will go through the tongue to the brain.

Researchers of the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition already provided envision equipment to vision at night. This device, known as ‘Brain Port’, was invented 30 years ago. This began mapping images from a camera through electrodes taped to people’s backs. Later it was discovered that the tongue was a superior transmitter.

A thin piece of red plastic connects the Brain Port to the tongue. 144 microelectrodes transmit information goes through nerve fibers to the brain. The soldiers can process the information through their tongues. Dr. Anil Raj is the leader of this project. By making it small enough, it can be mounted on a helmet of soldiers. The Florida institute is the first to research the military uses of sensory augmentation.
