While we have no control over aging, we do have control over how we age. By making the right lifestyle decisions, we can choose to age happily and healthily. Eat a Balanced Diet


Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring. Your diet should consist of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and of course, the occasional sweet treat. As a rule of thumb, the brighter the food, the healthier it is. Seniors need more calcium and vitamin D in their diets, so be sure to also eat plenty of low-fat dairy, including yogurt and cheese. Fortified milk and cereal can also boost calcium and vitamin D levels.

Other dietary tips include:

  • Eating nutrient-dense foods
  • Minimizing fatty, fried, and processed foods
  • Eating plenty of fiber
  • Drinking plenty of water

Aside from the food you eat, be aware of your caloric intake. As we get older we don’t need as many calories, so be mindful of how much and how often you’re eating. Aim for 3 meals a day with healthy snacks in between.

Stay Active

No matter if you’re 55 or 75, exercise is important. Staying physically active improves your health and minimizes the risk of common health conditions, including heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, and many others. Exercise isn’t the most exciting part of daily life, but it’s necessary. Spend 30 minutes a day taking part in some sort of physical activity. Go for a brisk walk with your dog.
