2nd Family Health Festival Rolls

Following on from last year’s successful inaugural event, we have a round-up of Family Health 2010 which runs in conjunction with the Dubai Shopping Festival

As part of its month-long programme of activities, Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) 2010 will see the roll-out of the second edition of the successful health initiative; the Family Health Festival. Aiming to generate health awareness amongst residents of the UAE, this event will visit malls across Dubai throughout the period of DSF, unveiling a series of workshops and entertainment activities, which are set against a backdrop of free health check-ups and counselling from medical experts.

The first Family Health Festival, which took place last year, made an appearance at 12 malls that were participating in DSF 2009, as well as at Global Village and the Night Souk. Exhealth, the company behind the concept, worked in conjunction with the organisers of DSF to create effective message delivery platforms in order to disseminate important health information. The initiative saw a footfall of 100,000 people, with 30,000 individual free health check-ups being administered to visitors at the specially created Family Health Festival kiosks. The malls in the Festival’s itinerary included Lamcy Plaza, Hamarain Centre, Wafi City, Deira City Centre, Century Mall, Al Ghurair Centre, Times Square, Bur Juman Centre and Al Seef. Encouraged by the response received during this inaugural campaign, which revealed a thirst for health knowledge amongst shoppers, the Family Health Festival has been commissioned for another year.

Family Health Festival was developed with the aim of addressing the most pertinent health topics for the UAE. This year, the focal subject is obesity, as the country has been labelled the world’s 18th ‘fattest’ nation (according to the World Health Organisation). The various consequences of being overweight will be highlighted, such as an increase in the incidence of diabetes, hypertension and depression. These important issues will be explored during individually-themed weeks which run across select malls that are participating in DSF, with the programmev being fully endorsed and supported by the UAE Ministry of Health. “In a scenario where nearly one out of every five individuals is obese, it becomes imperative to address the issue urgently. Obesity affects not just physical health, but also the psychological well-being of person,” said Naser Al Budoor, director of Health Minister’s Office, Ministry of Health.

“Green Crescent is pleased to be the main sponsor of the Family Health Festival for the second consecutive year. As people get too comfortable leading the busy lifestyle here in the UAE, an increasing number of them is exposed to various health complications. Recent reports have proved that the UAE is one among the countries leading in obesity which puts the nation under the risk of an obesity epidemic in the near future. Health awareness events like the Family Health Festival provide information and opportunities that benefit the health and well-being of both adults and children and direct them to leading healthier lifestyles,” said Carl J. Sardegna, Chief Executive Officer of Green Crescent Insurance Company.

The Roll-Out

Family Health Festival 2010 will use entertainment and education; otherwise known as ‘edutainment’ activities, to promote the message of maintaining a healthy bodyweight. Interactive work stations will help to promote this notion and fun tools such as cartoon skits and street plays will be used to educate shoppers, while health check-ups and individual counselling with professionals will provide important insights into their current health standing. Lively fitness displays will be provided, alongside health food demonstrations, to complete a repertoire that has been designed to promote a zest for life through good nutrition and exercise. Other special workshops include one that aims to raise the awareness of the importance of good hygiene, taking attendees through basic hygiene understanding, such as simple yet vital techniques for washing hands correctly, the best way to brush and floss teeth and the optimum eye and skin cleanliness regimes.

Cut That Fat

A month-long weight loss contest ‘Cut That Fat’ will be one of the main highlights of this year’s Family Health Festival. A panel of weight loss experts will guide 15 selected individuals through a programme that has been formulated to help them gain a better physique. The progress of the volunteers on the programme will be monitored throughout the Festival to help establish how successful a challenging and concerted weight loss programme can be. “Obesity is on the rise, fuelled by inappropriate eating habits coupled with sedentary and stressful lifestyles,” said Dr. Prem Jagyasi, MD and CEO, ExHealth, the organisation behind the Family Health Festival. “The condition of being excessively overweight leads to unhealthiness in individuals, which ultimately affects the overall well-being of a nation. The Family Health Festival has been designed to bring together residents, authorities, healthcare providers and responsible corporate organisations to address this pressing health issue and help usher in a new era of national prosperity,” he added.

ExHealth is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare solutions. The Family Health Festival is just one event in a series of successful community outreach health based programmes, which include Know Diabetes, Ahlaan Ramadan, the Summer Health Festival and the No Tobacco Campaign. All of these initiatives have been enthusiastically received by residents and are supported by the UAE Ministry of Health.
