Why is technology still far away from increasing human lifespan

Grow with Dr Prem

There has been considerable scientific development in healthcare field but we still have not been able to increase life span of humans. In the 20th century make believed that major scientific discoveries will lead to extension of number of years people live by the time we reach 21st century, but that has not happened as yet. In the following sections, we will look at reasons for it.

Recently Nobel Prize was given to Francois Engler together with Peter Higgs for their work on boson particle, which lets other particles acquire mass. Earlier, CERN has declared that they were on the path of detecting boson but then the LHC (Large Hadron Collidor) was stopped for improvement. In the 1990s, it all started with experts from various fields ranging from scientist to sociologists expected technological revolution and helped in funding developmental work of LHC.

Additionally, in 1990s, improving life span of humans seemed quite possible and many believed that theoretical definition of such possibility will be reached by 20th century and finally in 21st century, it will be practically implemented. But now it is clear that for any technological breakthrough to take place it take few decades and increasing life span is not looking as an achievable target for some time now.

The theoretical research is also far from being anywhere where anything concrete can be said about by when significant progress can be made in this regard. Reaching immortality, it seems now is only possible by genetically modifying people, which could well lead to end of humans from this planet and many are against research work on such idea.

Right from 1960s when work started on computer technology, there has been good progress in this field and we have many new gadgets and appliances, which make our lives easy, at present. However, it is also a fact that these changes are not improving our life expectancy and funds that can be used in advancement in other technological fields are diverting. Technology that can help increase life expectancy of humans can be developed but there is lack of funds to start work on it.
