Samsung has uncovered two Android based portable music players dubbed Galaxy Player 4.0 and Galaxy Player 5.0. The South Korean technology firm announced the music players, rivaling Apple iPod touch at IFA 2010 in Berlin. The devices were put on display at CES 2011 in Las Vegas. As of now, the Galaxy Players are available for grabs on market. Samsung has been a key manufacturer of Android products for a long time. The company is now a champion in both smartphone and tablet production. We received products like Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S II from the Korean company. Of course, they respectively confront with Apple iPad and iPhone.

Now Samsung has ventured into the portable music player market also. Two devices – Galaxy Player 4.0 and Player 5.0 – were released to directly compete with iPod touch. They run on the same operating system and are finally meant for the same purpose of music listening, with big differences in screen sizes and price only.

Form factor

Galaxy Player 4 is with the dimensions of 123.7 mm x 64.2 mm x 9.9 mm and a weight of 121 grams. On contrast, as we can assume, Galaxy Player 5 is fairly larger with the dimensions of 141.3 mm x 78.2 mm x 11.9 mm and a weight of 182 grams.

Display

Galaxy Player 4 features a 4-inch WVGA Super Clear LCD display with 800 x 480 pixels. Its 5-inch counterpart also has the same WVGA TFT LCD display with the equal resolution.

The screens are multi-touch capacitive touchscreen displays with 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope. Samsung has truly designed the music players so as to raise still challenge to Apple iPod touch. Interestingly, both Galaxy Players have large displays than its Apple contender.

Processor and RAM

Samsung music players are powered by 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor and 512MB of RAM. It is enough to make the players run faster. Web surfing and music listening will work with no shortfalls thanks to the advanced processor and RAM.

Galaxy Players play Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the award-winning version of Google Android for smartphones. Earlier, Samsung said its music players would run on Android 2.2 Froyo.

The Android PMPs sport 3.2-megapixel rear cameras with flash. You can capture images also with the music players. The devices also have front facing cameras for video calls.

It is here the Samsung music players have the major difference, indeed. Samsung sells Galaxy Player 4.0 for $229 and Player 5.0 for $269.

Winner: To attempt to find a winner from Galaxy Player 4.0 and Galaxy Player 5.0 is a pointless task. It is because Samsung has crafted the devices eyeing at different audiences. The first one is meant for those who wish to spend less and will be satisfied with a small display. Galaxy Player 5.0 has one inch larger display than Galaxy Player 4.0 and the same tech specs, however. And so, there is actually no winner in this comparison.

The Verdict

Samsung has shrewdly launched the Android-based Galaxy Players. The music industry is growing explosively. Apple might be one of the companies that took maximum advantage from the growing music industry with its iPod lineup including iPod touch. Samsung has now jumped into the frenzy with a goal to end the domination of iPod touch the way the company could put dent into the supremacy of iPhone in global markets with some dazzling Android phones.
