Both the home theater system and the music system are popular tools for the music lovers. However, they are basically two different appliances with significant differences in terms of technology and features. So, if you are wondering about which one to buy, it is important to know the differences between the two so that you can make the right choice on the basis of your needs.

However, there are certain aspects that are quite similar between the home theater system and the music system. For example, both the systems can play DVDs and other formats. Sometimes, both the systems comprise of the same number of speakers. Naturally, a person who is new to this can be confused. However, he/she must take care of certain factors that differentiate between these two systems.

1. The obvious difference between the music system and home theater system is that the former is meant for listening to music while the latter is designed to watch movies and videos. So, if you are a music lover, a Hi-Fi music system is likely to be your priority. On the other hand, the music theater is capable of offering visual entertainment, though the music quality is not as precise as the music system would be.

2. When you are talking about the Hi-Fi music system, you are actually talking about High Fidelity music system. Generally, they have two speakers with passive tower woofers. The home theater system generally has five to seven speakers that offer surrounding sound ideal for the complete movie experience. At the same time, they come up with one sub woofer.

3. A typical music system has only two channels. They have dedicated components like turntable, amplifiers, CD player and speakers to enable listening to music. On the other hand, the home theater systems are more complex and they comprise of various internal amplifiers, and means to decipher 5.1 surround info, etc.

4. Another difference between the home theater system and music system is that some of the home theater systems will require their speakers to show certain dispersion features. Their amplifiers too, should be able to meet a minimum performance standard. However, the rule is not applicable to all the home theater systems available in the market.

5. One of the most easily discernable differences between the home theater and music system is that the home theater system includes a large size movie screen. In fact, the system includes a screen that generally occupies the maximum field of view. So, you can easily engage yourself in the movie or the video that is being played in the system. The idea behind the home theater system is to recreate the sensations created in the real theater. On the other hand, the music system does not include such a vibrant screen. As the purpose of the system is to produce music only, the music systems generally have no screen for video.

6. The home theater systems come up with A/V connectors. These connectors enable the system to get connected to the video game consoles, Blu Ray players and other devices. Some of the home theater systems also come up with HDMI connector so that the system can be connected to the 3D TV sets quickly. Generally, there are no such connections available for the music systems. However, they too, may have certain connection ports through which sounds can be output to them.

As you can see, both the music system and home theater system have their strong points and weaknesses. When it comes to choosing one, it comes to your preferences. If you love high quality music, you should go for the music system. However, if you want all round performance, the home theater system is the one to go for.
