Cigarettes vs. cell phones, latter ‘more dangerous’

smoking

Over indulgence in anything could harm you and that’s the basic reasoning given by detractors of smoking. What if this reasoning was to be extended over to cell phones?

This is exactly what has been done by Dr Vini Khurana. A study by the award-winning cancer expert has come to the conclusion that the radiations from cell phones have potential to kill far more people than smoking or asbestos. He puts the onus on the government and mobile manufacturers to reduce the radiations that emanate from these devices. Already countries like France and Germany put restrictions on the usage of mobile phones.

Dr. Khurana – a recipient of 14 awards in last 16 years in the field of neurosurgery – drew on more than 100 research studies recounting effects of the use of cell phones on humans’ health. He specifically drew on the conclusions reported in the IoS in October. That study had indicated that using handsets for 10 years or more could double the risk of brain cancer. Professor Khurana’s paper has been put up on a brain surgery website and is also being reviewed by peers for publication in a scientific journal. In his own words:

There is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumors.

Nearly three billion people use mobile phones around the world; three times the number of people who smoke. Hence Dr Khurana also concludes that the usage may have greater implications for the health in general than smoking. However, Mobile Operators Association clearly begs to differ and dismissed the study as an unbalanced analysis by a single individual, with reporting contrary to WHO and other independent findings.

If the paper is published in a reputed journal, there’d be several studies more and we’d have some more concrete conclusions to draw. Till then just lay back on cell phones just as you try and lay back on your daily dose of nicotine!
