Wind-powered heat pump helps a Carlisle school cut heating bills by 25 percent

Stoneraise School at Durdar is walking toward a green future with its wind turbine. The teachers here have come together and brought in a heat pump that is powered by a wind turbine, producing nearly 5kw of heat for every 1kw of electricity consumed. A £4,400 donation from E.On, a power company, made it possible for the school to purchase a pump that is capable of cutting down its electricity consumption by 25 percent.

The heat pump installed by Carlisle Refrigeration works by using an outdoor refrigeration unit to extract warmth from the air, which is stored in condensed form and released into the building. The system serves another purpose also, during summer it can be reversed in order to provide air conditioning. The pump is more efficient as compared to conventional systems, as it makes use of already existing heat, rather than converting it from fuel.

The pump is not the only eco-friendly installation in the school. It also flaunts other eco-friendly features that include automatic light switches, a solar panel heated water system and under-floor heating in newer rooms.
