North America to have 40,000 wind turbines by 2015

It’s been only four days since Texas got the Roscoe Wind Complex, the world’s largest wind farm, and now, analysis firm Pike Research has come up with its new report “Wind Energy Outlook For North America” that predicts that 40,000 new wind turbines will be installed across North America by the year 2015. Last year, U.S. wind power generation capacity crossed the 25 GW mark with an addition of over 8 GW from the year before. It was the largest individual increase of any country in the world. The figures are quite impressive considering the fact that the global economic crisis has already hindered many wind projects.

The report sees the year 2009 as a defining moment for wind power markets around the world. The wind energy industry will continue to grow, but the pace of growth will be less as expected prior to 2009. The report foresees that the U.S. installed capacity may reach more than 80 GW by 2015. Funding issues remain there, but the government policies are positive when we talk about the renewable energy targets. Last month only, the Treasury Department gave over $1 billion in cash awards to 27 clean energy companies, especially wind operations. On the whole, Pike Research expects the turbine sales in the U.S. to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 9.7% to achieve an annual production volume of about 8,000 turbines by 2015.
