After a green makeover, the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh is all set to welcome its visitors via the John Hope Gateway. The £15m renovation has transformed it to a center of sustainability, since a wind turbine and solar panels power it. Moreover, it has rainwater collectors and a biomass boiler to enhance its overall green appeal.
The central spiral staircase adds an element of design to it. However, a large Gateway restaurant and an outdoor seating deck make it a nice venue for the nature lovers. Here, they can witness how the biodiversity of our planet is undergoing tremendous environmental changes and how successfully the Scottish Government has realized its goal to be a low carbon economy.
The John Hope Gateway got £10m in funding from the Scottish Government Rural and Environment Research and Analysis Directorate (RERAD) and the rest of it came from grant bodies (including £3.2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund), trusts, corporates and individuals.
