Where the green thinkers from the world over are turning vacant spaces into green zones, the BCA (Building and Construction Authority) Academy has added another aspect to it in retrofitting Singapore’s and the world’s first Zero Energy Building (ZEB). It was officially unveiled yesterday at the inaugural Singapore Green Building Week (SGBW) by the Minister for National Development, Mr. Mah Bow Tan as was expected.

The $11 million flagship R&D project is about 40-50% more efficient than its existing parallels. Well, the building is not completely off the grid, still it produces what it spends in terms of electricity. Thanks to the roof mounted solar panels that produce about 207,000 kWh of electricity a year, a single coil twin fan ventilation system for recycling the air, the building is also the first existing building in Southeast Asia flaunting green building design features and technologies.

Moreover, what you can expect are fully functioning classrooms, a library, a multipurpose hall and offices for those who wish to learn the tenets of green living.
