Students from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have successfully built a boat powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Dubbed as the New Clermont, the vessel will launch from Pier 84 in Manhattan on Monday, September 21. The expedition starting from Manhattan will conclude at Troy Night Out on September 25. The trip is being organized to demonstrate that fuel cells can be used in marine vehicles.

The New Clermont uses two hydrogen-powered fuel cells that are borrowed from Plug Power Inc. in Latham. The boat also includes four hydrogen storage canisters that will be refueled along the trip several times by Airgas Inc., a specialty gases company. Let’s hope to see some more green efforts like this one in the future too.
