The University of Fort Hare is all set to go green with its East London Campus. The design of the new building is a true depiction of sustainable architecture. Worth £56 million, the structure incorporates features to conserve energy, the use of alternative energy sources and rainwater harvesting. Designed by East London architect Al Stratford, who is presently serving the South African Institute of Architects as a president, the structure will be naturally ventilated and features huge storage tanks for rainwater harvesting. These two components together make the building self-reliant.
The innovative flooring used for the building has led to lower carbon footprint. Situated between Church, Buffalo and Commissioner streets, this building is being said to be a direct response to the environment, culture and people of East London. The eco-friendly building will be completed in two different phases and the date for the second phase is yet to be announced. Currently, the premises offer two lecture theaters, with space for 350 students. It will be fully functional as a lecture and teaching complex for University of Fort Hare health sciences and law students by 2011.
