Students build models of green cities of the future

Indiana Regional Future City Competition that was held last week at the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne gave young students the opportunity to design and build model cities for the future. The competition drew 28 middle school teams from Indiana, whose designs centered on the theme ‘affordable housing using green ideals’.

Middle school students from Canterbury School entered the competition with a city called Nage Nuage. Their model displayed a city in the northwest corner of the Appalachian Mountains that included a wind generator, power plant, hotel and convention center with a restaurant at the top. Nage Nuage is a French name for ‘the swimming cloud’. Residing in the middle of the concept city is an art center modeled after the John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center at IPFW.

The Woodside Middle School team came up with a city called ‘Novus Vita,’ meaning new life. It depicts a rebuilt city near Charleston, S.C., after being wiped out by a hurricane in 2080. Greeville is the name given to a city built by Evansville Christian School students. Greenville featured water collection units atop every building so the water could be reused; temporary homes for low-income people and those who lost their homes in natural disasters; and many parks so the trees could provide oxygen. The team that stood out and won the Saturday’s competition was Blackhawk Middle School team. The students won a trip to Washington, D.C., for the Future City Competition national finals.
