Myriant Technologies’ Succinic Acid Biorefinery Project gets $50 Million aid

succinic acid biorefinery project

Massachusetts-based Myriant Technologies LLC has hit upon a succinic acid production method that makes use of an energy-efficient biobased process. As the acid is an important ingredient in diesel fuel additives, pharmaceuticals, plastic car parts, computer casings and shoe soles, the technology ensures that more production doesn’t knock back more greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, the process absorbs more carbon dioxide than it produces.

We applaud their recognition of the importance of biobased chemicals as a leading component of biorefineries. Our Succinic Acid platform provides a “win-win” solution in terms of cost, environmental benefits and reduction in our dependence on imported oil and puts critical jobs to work right here in the United States.

Says Stephen J. Gatto, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Myriant.

Succinic acid is produced from biomass employing aerobic organisms that convert carbs and other natural fuels into usable energy. Just recently, Myriant got $50 million in aid from the U.S. Department of Energy to carry on its research and finally establish its plant for commercial scale production of the acid from sorghum.
