For the coasters:

The first thing that you need to do when making coasters out of old magazines is to determine how tall you want the coasters to be. For round coasters, the wraparound approach works best.

To make round coasters, you need to begin by cut 1 to 1-1/2 inch strips from the magazine. Staple the ends of various strips to create one very long strip of paper. Begin by rolling one end of the strip onto itself. Once this roll has reached ¼ inch thickness, you need to glue the inner end of the paper strip and roll it till it reaches the desired diameter.

Allow the glue to dry thoroughly. When it has, you need to place the coaster on a page from the magazine that you would like to see on top and on the underside of the finished coaster and trace an outline. Cut this round shapes out and glue to the top and bottom side of the coaster. If the surface of the coaster feels a little uneven, you can place a few more round shaped layer of magazine paper to even the surface out.

For the snack bowl:

To make a snack bowl out of old magazines, you basically need to make a coaster (as shown above) that is large enough to be the base of your bowl. Then, instead of gluing the end of the strip off, you need to ensure that with each wrap you are only gluing half the width of the strip to the layer under it. This would give your snack bowl a vertical wall that gradually grows outwards from your base. Continue to wrap the paper strip around till the desired height has been reached. You would need to allow the paper bowl to dry for a few hours as leftover glue would need time to set.
