Going green the way celebs do

pamela-anderson

Celebrities, who are better known for their status, riches, luxurious lifestyle and what not, are now paying heed to the green revolution. They are now becoming supporters of sustainability, alternative energy and green construction. The list comprising the likes of Justin Timberlake, Pamela Anderson, Minnie Driver and Cate Blanchett seems to extend on and on. We’ve enumerated some of these who have shown considerable compassion toward a green lifestyle and practices:

1) Leonardo DiCaprio

His contribution to Mother Nature:
Environment-conscious actor Leonardo DiCaprio is as good as his words. He practices what he preaches. The star started an eco-site in 2000 to spread awareness regarding the environmental issues and has been a Board Member of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Global Green USA since 2004. Recently he bought an apartment that is a true depiction of an eco-friendly home with features like rotating solar panels, low emission paints and a 24-hour fresh filtered air system. He has been seen driving around in hybrid cars and encourages other to practice the same.

What contribution we can make:

His acts inspire us to inculcate green living in our lives and spread environment awareness in our own little way. We can also green our home by efficiently using resources like energy, water and materials, and reducing the building’s impact on human health and the environment.

2) Brad Pitt

His contribution to Mother Nature:
Brad, who always wanted to be an architect, is putting his passion to good use by re-building eco-friendly homes in New Orleans. Pitt collaborated with Global Green USA to build 150 green homes in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, the area most affected by Hurricane Katrina. He convinced 9 civic groups and 13 architecture firms to provide their services for free, and with that also donated $5 million to support his $12 million dollar Make It Right project.

What contribution we can make:

We can make some eco-friendly changes in our own home. Use low-wattage light bulbs and install motion sensors so that you will not leave lights on unnecessarily, focus on sustainable architecture and use energy resources more efficiently. Support non-profit membership organizations whose mission is to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient building practices.

3) Pamela Anderson

Her contribution to Mother Nature:
Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has recently tied up with the Atlas Group to build a green spa/hotel in Montenegro. The hotel and spa, based on ecological principals, will offer vegetarian and organic food, plenty of entertainment and contemporary design. Apart from this eco-friendly hotel, Pamela already has two international green building projects to her credit, one in the United Arab Emirates while the other is in Canada.

What contribution we can make:

We can contribute by making minor adjustments during our stay at her green spa/hotel by taking shorter showers and preserving water, reusing the towels and asking housekeeping not to change the sheets daily.

4) Cameron Diaz

Her contribution to Mother Nature:
Cameron’s green efforts are quite evident from her greener way of living. The model turned actress, who works with Gwenyth Paltrow to promote Act Green, insists on using offsets of carbon-neutral travel and drives around Hollywood in her hybrid Toyota Prius. The actress not only is seen encouraging people to use eco-friendly furniture but also gives them some interesting tips. She has even started sporting eco-friendly fashion. Cameron is all set to release a new celebrity Green Book, which offers 700 solutions to everyday life from travel to beauty products, to household and sporting products.

What contribution we can make:
Playing our part efficiently, we could go all green with fashion. The initiatives could include using eco-friendly clothes, re-use old items and find clothes that require minimal care. We can also go green with our driving techniques.

5) Will Ferrell

His contribution to Mother Nature:
Will is associated with the Pioneer Program under which BMW’s luxurious hydrogen cars are gifted to celebrities to elevate awareness. The zero-emission eco-friendly sedan that has completed the product development process will be made available soon.

What contribution we can make:
We can contribute by greening our driving style by moving slow, steady and smooth rather than racing to make a light. Make ways to keep your car clean with regular turn-ups so that less gas consumption and emitting less pollution is possible.

6) Sheryl Crow

Her contribution to Mother Nature:
Sheryl Crow is here to pay her share with her new eco-friendly clothing line. Titled under the name Bootheeled Trading Co. by Sheryl Crow, the collection will include jeans, vintage shirts and vests, all reasonably priced under $65.

What contribution we can make:
Think on eco-friendly lines by greening your wardrobe. Inculcate habits of using eco-friendly clothes, revive new life to your old items by re-using them, buy second-hand clothes, wear clothes a couple of times before giving them a wash and look for clothing that doesn’t require dry-cleaning, a process that uses a lot of chemicals.

7) Justin Timberlake

His contribution to Mother Nature:
Justin Timberlake has opened his new eco-friendly Mirimichi Golf Course, making it the first in the country to receive the Audubon International Classic Sanctuary certification. Timberlake has installed a rainwater-driven irrigation system to water the course. In addition, the course uses solar-powered golf carts to cut down on energy cost.

What contribution we can make:
We certainly cannot go as big as Timberlake, but nonetheless can use rainwater to irrigate our small lawns. We can also use energy efficiently by installing solar panels on our homes.

8) Alicia Silverstone

Her contribution to Mother Nature:
Alicia Silverstone, the popular American actress, has started getting a lot of recognition for her environmental activism. The actress is out with her collection of green makeup cases and brushes with EcoTools to provide a lot of style without having to compromise with eco-friendly aspects. The brushes will be made from bamboo, with synthetic fibers, while the pretty floral bags will be made with hemp and non-toxic ink.

What contribution we can make:
We do not have to sacrifice style to make environmentally conscious selections. Today’s women can use eco-friendly make-up solutions to add that extra oomph.

9) Minnie Driver

Her contribution to Mother Nature:
Actress and singer Minnie Driver has teamed up with Procter & Gamble’s Dawn brand to save wildlife this summer. Minnie has become the spokesperson for Dawn’s “Everyday Wildlife Champions” campaign to promote their efforts to save wildlife. She is also seen promoting environmental practices.

What contribution we can make:
Her efforts encourage us to save wildlife, which is one of the most important issues of today’s time. We can get associated with some wildlife rehabilitation center or some campaign that helps protect wildlife. Another small but valuable step could be to give shelter to animals and birds.

10) Cate Blanchett:

What contribution we can make:
It would not be wrong to say that we can learn a lot from this beautiful actress’s efforts. We can green our dwelling by efficient use of resources like energy and water, giving a great boost to the environment. Solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems are a good medium to brighten our lives.
