British architectural firm Foster + Partners’ masterplan has been finalized for a new 71-hectare medical research campus in Mexico City. Sitting next to the southern medical cluster and the National University, the Campus Biometropolis will include laboratories, research institutions, a centre of medical excellence, offices, shops and staff residential facilities.

While introducing some novelties to the overall design of the site, the developer makes sure that it does not adulterate the inherent biological diversity of the region. So, a ‘wilderness area’ – a new nature reserve, “showcasing the Pedregal lava fields as a highlight of the design”, for indigenous plants and animal species is among the top priorities.

Moreover, the campus will have ample green spaces that will allow the rainwater from roofs, roads and open spaces to seep through it into the aquifer below. Public piazzas, pedestrian streets and cooling courtyards will further enhance the urban savor of the campus.
