Maya Lin’s sculpture shows what is at stake and why reducing our environmental impact is one of our most urgent challenges. By making significant changes in our daily lives, such as driving less, recycling more or supporting sustainable food production, we can stem global warming and protect endangered species for generations to come.
The permanent sculpture, dubbed as ‘What is Missing?’, erected at the Renzo-Piano-designed California Academy of Sciences memorizes those species who became extinct due to climate change and destruction of their natural habitats.
The conical bronze installation lined with reclaimed wood has dimensions reading 8’6″h x 10’8″w x 19’2″l. There’s a 2′ 4 ¼”h x 4’6″w multimedia screen located within the cone that features more than 20 minutes of video footage on climate change and its adverse effects on endangered species like the tuna, dodo bird, monarch butterfly, golden toad, and others.
