We need some practical solution to mend our wasteful habits. If it’s not possible, the next best course of action is to convert all litter to something useful. Envion, a Washington DC-based company, aims at the same in converting plastic trash into a light-brown synthetic fuel that resembles oil. Anyhow, that’s what its motto says: Waste to Resource. Costing $10 per barrel, the fuel can power a truck or a jet airplane.
More than 80% of plastic waste available suits the Envion Oil Generator. The process involves low-temperature far-infrared thermal cracking of the raw material assisted by gas. Resultantly, it effectively yields 3 to 6 barrels of fuel from one ton of plastic waste. Envion hopes to buy its product to an anonymous company to blend it into vehicle fuel.
Since it’s the need of the hour to stick to renewable energy sources, such plants are sprouting up to do the needed work. Envion, accordingly, plans to invest $5 million in the project.
