Largest recycled lantern from Singapore

The mid-autumn festival revelry in the Chinatown area in Singapore will definitely acquire a distinct green hue, as a huge lantern made from 6,000 used mineral water bottles and 2,000 compact discs will make it different from the past celebrations. The 5.3m tall, recycled lantern is put on public view at the pavement beside the busy boulevard outside Chinatown Point along New Bridge Road.

Considering how plastic and vinyl keep on piling up in landfills, it’s indeed a good move to recycle them. Still, it’s an arduous task and that’s the reason it took the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee and Chinatown Point nearly 2½ months to create the lantern.

The Singaporean Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Yacoob Ibrahim, unveiled it yesterday. Since it’s Singapore’s largest, it has also entered the Singapore’s Book of Records.
