Doesn’t the word ‘surfing’ leave you enthralled with thoughts of crystal-clear water and adventure? But, despite the heavenly experience, the ugliest thing associated with the sport lies right beneath our feet. What I am referring to is the conventional surfboard, which is 100 percent toxic. To save the beaches and the oceans from the pollution spread by the $7.2 billion surfing industry, a new start-up company named Green Foam Blanks is here with a pioneering solution.

The guys at Green Foam Blanks have come up with an innovative method to reduce waste emitted by the surfboard industry. What they do is they collect polyurethane shavings thrown by other surfboard factories and combine the cuttings with virgin foam using a proprietary system to create new surfboard blanks. With this initiative, the company aims to reduce the production process of new foam, which is typically made with a carcinogenic compound called toluene diisocyanate, or TDI.

The surfboards made by Green Foam Blanks use nearly 60 to 65 percent of recycled waste. The company that was launched earlier this year has sold some 1,000 recycled surfboards already. An effort worth appreciating…
