Habitat for Humanity, the world leader in addressing the issues of poverty housing, has come up with a unique idea of insulating homes. It has started an eco-campaign wherein it recycles cotton from denim jackets and blue jeans. It has collected over 200 pairs of denim and is seeking active participation from the University of Memphis students.
Brad Robb, the vice president of communications for the Cotton Board, says:
[The recycled cotton] is environmentally friendly. Not only is it just as good as regular insulation, you don’t have to use gloves. It’s not itchy, so that’s a plus. [It takes] roughly about 500 average size jeans for an average size house, around 1600 feet.
The eco-campaign, dubbed as ‘Cotton: From Blue to Green’, is supposed to continue through the end of October. Those interested to donate their worn denims may drop them at the collection boxes set up across the University or make sure to be at the Tiger’s Den on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
