Germany, a country that flaunts its world wind leadership status, is here to add some more to its credit. The nation will soon have 40 wind farms placed on a more than 12-mile stretch off the coast. As of now, the farms would supply an estimated 12,000 megawatts of power, which is enough to power 12 million homes. However, the aim is to obtain 25,000 megawatts by 2030.

The offshore wind production is a comparatively new concept for Germany. It got its first offshore wind project just a few months back. The project of just 15 megawatts was signed with the Alpha Ventus project and was co-financed by three German giants, Vattenfall, E.on and EWE. Apart from financing by the trio, subsidies were also received from the German government.

The three energy giants will finance the new 40-farm offshore wind project also. Twenty-two out of the 40 new wind farms have already received government approval. The North Sea will be the home to 30 wind farms, whereas the remaining 10 would be positioned in the Baltic Sea. The 12,000 megawatts generated from these farms will get Germany well on its way to meeting its overall renewable energy goals under the Kyoto accords set decades ago.
