Processed foods can cause Fatty Liver Disease in children

fatty liver
It is being said for long that processed food is causing harm to human body and is one of the prime reasons for increase in the number of obese people in the global population. Researchers led by David S. Ludwig, Director of the Optimal Weight for Life program have come up with more startling revelations. The high glycemic indexed processed foods are responsible for not only increasing the fat in the body’s blood stream but are also responsible for fatty liver diseases in children.

Glycemic Index (GI) is the measure of how fast a food releases glucose from starch. The higher the index the faster the food releases glucose. The rapid release of glucose causes the body to release more insulin, which in turn causes the body to store fat.

Examples of High GI foods are processed foods such as white rice, foods containing white flour and overly processed whole grains.

According to an article from Can West News Service, a ten-year-old girl was the first child to be diagnosed with cirrhosis of liver in 2000. Since then liver disease is rising among children in the age group of five to ten years, with the youngest victim being only two years of age.

However, one point to be noted is that GI is not everything. Some high GI foods like watermelon, figs and parsnips are good for health, whereas low GI foods such as Peanut M&M, Snicker bars and low fat ice creams need to be avoided. The main point of this research is that a diet rich in high GI foods are causing liver disease even in the young.

Therefore, pick up a healthy diet comprised of fresh raw foods to avoid liver malfunctioning.
