nyc eateries ready for trans fat switch 9Providing no known benefit to human health, trans fats are either tightly regulated in some countries, becoming the central issue in several ongoing lawsuits. In several countries, where it has not been banned from use in foods, in the lines of increasing concerns for growing obesity problems across the world, disclosing it on product labels are made mandatory.

New York too, ballyhooed ban on trans fat cooking oils in all its restaurants from this July 1, Sunday. Though its first proposal gave chefs indigestion, the transition seems to be amazingly going smooth!

Though, the trans fat overhaul is a major victory for health advocates, the major chains are still in their defying moods claiming that regulation and a lawsuit will overturn it.

To allow a smooth transition, the city will not fine anyone for violating either rule until Oct. 1, although most fast food chains across the city have already made the switch with – the cooking oil companies ramping up production of trans-fat alternatives and the restaurant supply companies stocking kitchens with replacement products.

As a overwhelming response, the smaller restaurants are also ready for the switch. The city has set up a special help line for chefs, to assist tem reforming their kitchens.

With their only advantage over health of being cheaper with a longer shelf life, the heart disease-triggering trans fats are soon to disappear from the New York markets to give you all reasons to munch those yummy French fries even maintaining a quality healthy life.
