New vaccine may be the answer to CJD threat

meat can be secured from bse contamination 9

The UK food industry is worried with BSE-infected meat getting into its chain. To ensure its non-entry to the chain, tight rules have been introduced. A human once infected with vCJDa deadly prion diseasegenerally by consuming contaminated meat, can never be cured leading to brain damage, with dementia and abnormal limb movements as his destiny.

But, a New York University team seems to have come to their rescue by claiming to have come up with a vaccine capable of decreasing the prion disease’s spread in animals. This would eventually reduce the risk of its spread in humans soon.

The vaccine has has been successfully tested in mice and the researchers are confident that it could also be considered for humans. Dr Thomas Wisniewski along with his team has tested the prototype that is made from prion proteins. These proteins are taken from the ones attached to a genetically modified strain of a bug called Salmonella.

The bacterium Salmonella has already been used in a number of vaccines for both animal and human.

Ah! Not just for humans, the scientists hope to go a step forward in redesigning the vaccine, to help in its application even on deer and cattle!
