Guard against breast cancer while preventing pregnancy with the same drug. It is no dream. Such new generation of contraceptive could be available within five years, according to scientists.
A drug is used in higher doses to cause abortions. And patient trials of the drug have shown it to be an effective contraceptive with few side-effects. Animal and cell models too, have suggested that it can protect against breast tumors.
The new pill would contain no female hormones, and women taking it would have no periods and would thus be unlikely to suffer from pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS). Compare to the existing varieties, the contraceptive is also thought to carry a lower risk of blood clots.
