New brain-targeting Schizophrenia drug brings hope

The devastating brain disorder — Schizophrenia – though is highly treatable, has no cure. Antipsychotic medications and psycho-social therapies, thus being the best remedies, is worrisome not only for those afflicted but also very costly for both families and society.

Ina bid to find more effective solutions, scientists all over the world are all set to develop many new and improving psycho-social treatments and cognitive therapies.

Though, currently over 15 new medications for the treating schizophrenia by different biotech and pharmaceuticals companies have come up, a new study has come to stay with promising results.

Scientists have come up with a new schizophrenia drug — LY2140023 — whose first human trial has yielded promising results.

What sets the new drug apart is its targeting the glutamate receptors of the brain, unlike the other antipsychotics targeting dopamine.

All said and experiments done, what rises the question is – will the new drug lead to the development of a third generation drug treatments for schizophrenia? And, if it does, it would save 30,000 people from the disease, in a city of 3 million.
