New Bird Flu Death in Iraq

A 39-year-old man, who died in northern Iraq in January, was killed by the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the Iraqi health ministry has confirmed. It was on 18 January; Hamasour Mustafa developed symptoms of the virus and died on 27 January in the city of Sulaimaniya.

Experts in infection control and epidemiology has been sent to the region to help, by the World Health Organization. A large number of domestic birds have already been culled by the Iraqi authorities. The affected area borders Turkey. It is where bird flu has been found in poultry and four people have died of the virus.
